However, to close the distance , you need to be able to defend against strikes. Failing to do so will leave you vulnerable to being knocked out or seriously injured.
We recommend that you supplement your BJJ training with some form of striking, such as Muay Thai. Muay Thai will teach you how to throw punches and kicks with power and precision. It will also give you the ability to defend against strikes, which is essential for close-quarters combat.
Fighting Against Multiple Opponents

No Weapons Training
In a real fight, anything can be used as a weapon. This includes knives, guns, and even everyday objects like chairs and bottles.
However, in Brazilian jiu jitsu, there is no weapons training. This is because the focus of BJJ is on grappling and ground fighting. As a result, you will not learn how to defend yourself against weapons.
This can be a serious disadvantage in a real fight. If your opponent has a weapon, you need to know how to defend yourself. Failing to do so could result in you being seriously injured or even killed.
The best way to defend yourself against weapons is to avoid the fight altogether. Weapons are unpredictable and can seriously injure or kill you. If you can, it is always best to walk away from a fight that has the potential to turn violent.

Not Effective Against Bigger Opponents
Brazilian jiu jitsu is not very effective against much bigger opponents. This is because BJJ relies on taking your opponent to the ground, and this is much more difficult to do when you are fighting someone who is bigger than you.
On the ground, a bigger opponent is also going to have an advantage. They will be able to use their weight to their advantage, making it difficult for you to submit them.
Some tips when fighting against bigger opponents:
- Use your speed and agility to your advantage: Being smaller and lighter means that you will be faster and more agile than your opponent. Use this to your advantage by attacking quickly and then getting away before they can counter.
- Control the grip: Don’t let your opponent get a hold of you. If they do, they will be able to control the fight. Instead, control the grip and use it to your advantage.
- Rear naked choke: Many submissions don’t work as well against bigger opponents. However, the rear naked choke is an exception. This is because it can be applied without the need for a lot of strength.
- Control the distance: Don’t let your opponent get too close. If they do, they will be able to use their weight and size to their advantage. Instead, keep them at a distance where you can use your speed and agility to your advantage
- Take the back: When you are on the ground, one of the best positions to be in is on your opponent’s back. This position will allow you to control them and apply a variety of submissions.
